Texas Septic Regulations
Texas regulates on-site sewage facilities (OSSFs) through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and delegated local authorities. All installations, repairs, and alterations must be permitted.
Permits
A permit from the local designated representative or TCEQ is required before installing or modifying a septic system. Licensed installers and site evaluators must be used. Standard systems serving single-family homes with less than 5,000 gallons per day fall under standard permitting.
Inspections
Systems must be inspected at installation. Maintenance companies must hold a valid TCEQ license. Aerobic treatment units require maintenance contracts and semi-annual inspections. Property transfers may trigger inspection requirements depending on the county.
