Florida Septic Regulations

Florida regulates septic systems through the Florida Department of Health (DOH) at the county level. The state has over 2.6 million septic systems, one of the highest counts in the U.S.

Permits

A construction permit is required from the county DOH office before installing a septic system. Site evaluations include soil borings and wet-season water table determinations. Permits are site-specific and cannot be transferred to other locations.

Inspections

All new installations are inspected before being covered. Florida passed legislation requiring periodic inspections for systems near certain waterways and springs. Inspection frequency varies by county and system type.
